Welcome to PAR-L's first electronic research news bulletin. We plan to post News/Niouzes as an e-mail message to members of the PAR-L discussion list and archive it on our Web site at http://www.unb.ca/par-l/bulletin/bullindex.htm several times a year. Our goal is to bring you brief notices of recent publications and reminders of upcoming conferences and events of interest to feminists across Canada, along with an interview or biographical article featuring an individual or organization doing feminist research.
Initially, PAR-L News/Niouzes will focus on the work of the eight non-government organizations (NGO's) that are our official partners in the PAR-L Strategic Research Network Grant from SSHRC. As we get into full swing, we will welcome research news from all feminist research organizations in Canada who share our objectives and who choose to join in. A form for joining the PAR-L Research News Network will soon be available on our web site. Initially, there will be no fee for joining and advertising publications through this news network. When our SSHRC grant expires in three years, however, we will need to consider the possibility of fees for this service.
We do not have the resources to make every news item available in both French and English, so we will post the research summaries in whichever official language(s) the information comes to the Editors, English and/or French.
We hope this new service will be of benefit to your organization and to feminist researchers, teachers, students, policy-makers, and advocates across the country. Your suggestions and feedback are most welcome.

This resource guide is designed to provide information on women's studies programs in Canada, with special emphasis on those programs that have a practicum component. It is developed from a research project CRIAW/ICREF conducted in 1998-99 aimed at discovering the experiences of women's groups and students who participated in women's studies practica across the country.
Invoking Community: Rethinking the Health of Lesbian and Bisexual Women. Feminist Voices No. 10.

Lesbian and bisexual women living in an Atlantic province were interviewed about their health care experiences. Many of them emphasized the importance of the role of community, speaking from a collective - as opposed to individual - perspective. The relationship between community and health is explored according to five interview themes: community as buffer; regulatory norms; fragmented identities; invisible support; and inclusive safer sex information.
Manitoba Struggle for Rights: Lesbians and their Families: Sandra L. Kirby, Heidi Streu, Susan Riley, Janet Simpson
In this book, lesbians tell the reader what they have experienced and what needs to be done to eliminate discrimination against lesbians, discrimination which affects them, their families, intimate relationships, children, work, community activities, and their access to social supports. This text conveys two principle messages; first, that the forms and effects of discrimination against lesbians and their families need to be eliminated and second, that there are simple and straightforward ways to bring about immediate and positive change.

When it comes to health, do sex and gender matter? New research from Canada's five Centres of Excellence for Women's Health addresses this important question. This inaugural edition of their Research Bulletin presents studies, some complete, some in progress, that offer new insights and data about the social determinants of health, including the role of health policy in shaping health, and the ways in which these determinants interact with sex and gender.

No. 93: The Differential Impact of Health Care Privatization in Alberta.

This report traces the development of health policy initiatives from 1989 to the present, demonstrating that there has been consistent support for increasing the role of the private market in Alberta's health care system. The study addresses various forms of privatization, the differential impact of privatization between groups of women, and the limiting of public participation in the planning process.
The Canadian Women's Health Network Magazine is published quarterly. The Summer 2000 issue (Volume 3, Number 3) contains articles on genetically modified foods, and soy as a product. Women, Poverty and Health in Manitoba: An Overview and Ideas for Action

This new research report addresses the relationship between the socio-economic status of women in Manitoba and their health. It describes the income distribution in Canada and Manitoba, and provides a summary of literature on the relationship between income and health. The report includes an analysis of data pertaining to the utilatization of health services in Manitoba by women. In addition, it describes in-depth some of the key issues relating to health services for
low income women, and offers ideas for public policy intervention that will aid in improving the health of Manitoba women living in poverty.

NAWL, WCDWA, NOIVMWC and the Table féministe make recommendations to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration on the proposed Bill C-31, An Act respecting immigration to Canada and the granting of refugee protection to persons who are displaced, persecuted or in danger. Although it is recognized that a number of important reforms are being introduced with Bill C-31, the authors are deeply concerned about the Bill's lack of progress for immigrant and refugee women. This brief will discuss some of the important avenues of reform, from the specific perspective of women, taking into account not only gender, but also race and class. We also comment on other important aspects of the Bill that cry out for improvement, as the Canadian Council of Refugees, the Canadian Bar Association and INTERCEDE, for example, have already done so in their excellent briefs.

In this brief the authors use the egalitarian framework to argue for the abolition of the defence of provocation, because of its sexist, homophobic, racist and patriarchal ramifications. NAWL calls specifically for the repeal of the mandatory life sentence for murder, as well as the repeal of the new mandatory minimum sentence of four years imprisonment for those who use a firearm in the commission of a number of specific offences, including manslaughter.

Women'space
Women'space magazine, starting with the Summer 2000 issue, exists as an electronic publication only. This issue features articles on web designs that don't work, safety issues on the Internet, networking, and privacy on-line. There is also a book review of the new Spiniflex anthology Cyberfeminism.
The Winter 2000 issue features articles on the effective use of e-mail, and using the Internet for advocacy -- to increase dialogue between nurses, connecting French speaking feminists, and how to get more women contributing to the Internet. The featured book review is the new UNIFEM publication, Women @ Work Against Violence: Voices in Cyberspace. Please note: The Winter 2000 issue of Women'space is the last issue to be published in both paper and electronic formats.
Marche mondiale des femmes 2000 / World March of Women 2000
Du 8 mars au 17 octobre 2000 / March 8th - October 17th, 2000
Le 15 octobre 2000, dans le cadre de la Marche mondiale des femmes, les Canadiennes et les Canadiens qui appuient les revendications des femmes marcheront vers la colline du Parlement à Ottawa. Le rassemblement est prévu à midi et la marche convergera vers la colline à partir de nombreux points de rencontre à Ottawa et à Hull. Aux États-Unis, la directrice du Fonds monétaire international, madame Horst Köhler, rencontrera les représentantes de la Marche mondiale des femmes le 15 octobre à Washington. Le secrétaire général des Nations Unies, M. Kofi Annan, recevra les représentantes de la Marche le 17 octobre à New York.
On October 15, 2000, as part of the International World march, Canadians who show support for women's demands with gather in Ottawa to march and rally on Parliament Hill. The rally is scheduled for noon, and the march to the Hill will occur from several sites in Ottawa and Hull. In the USA, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Mr.Horst Köhler, will meet with the World March of Women delegation on October 15 in Washington. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr.Kofi Annan, will receive the delegation on October 17 in New York.

The Future of Women's Studies: Foundations, Interrogations, Politics

This conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of Women's Studies at the University of Arizona, the 20th anniversary of the Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW) and the 15th anniversary of the Women's Studies Advisory Council (WOSAC) at the University of Arizona. This is a working conference, where national, regional and local faculty, researchers, teachers, students, administrators, and activists will synthesize the national debates in the field to explore how they relate to their individual and collective goals. The plenary sessions will be followed by concurrent workshops.

Feminist Utopias will be the launch and inaugural conference of the Institute for Women's Studies and Gender Studies (IWSGS), which came into existence in 1999. Feminist Research, Action and Change: a CRIAW Participatory Forum

The Forum will look at the links between feminist research, action and social change. Its objective is to allow us to acquire new knowledge and strategies which we can implement in our research and lives on doing good feminist research, on effectively communicating research and on taking action on research that is likely to lead to policy change and/or a change in community practices.
