PAR-List Help Desk
PAR-L is a listserv discussion group - what does
this mean?
"LISTSERV" tends to be used as a generic term referring to electronic on-line mailing lists
but it really isn't. LISTSERV refers specifically to the commercial program owned and
licensed by L-Soft International.
LISTSERV is a system that makes it possible to create, manage and control electronic
"mailing lists" on networks or on the Internet. It is managed by a list owner who is
formally responsible for the operation of the discussion group. The list owner is the
person who determines the policies and rules for the discussion group. The list owner
manages all administrative matters, including answering questions from subscribers.
The messages sent to a LISTSERV discussion group are saved in files known as list
archives for future reference. The archive files are owned by the list owner and they
determine the policies for the use of archived messages. These archives are usually
organized in log files. A log file is a disk file containing everything that was said
on the list in a given period of time.
The subscriber can send commands to LISTSERV. These commands are used for joining and
leaving the list, to help with setting up the format for receiving the messages from
the discussion group, and for accessing the archived messages sent previously.
The commands you can use as a subscriber to PAR-L include: subscribe, unsubscribe,
query, set, help, index, get. See our Other technical questions
section for more information.
PAR-L is a moderated discussion group - what does this mean?
PAR-L is a moderated discussion group in the sense that every message gets sent to the
moderators of PAR-L automatically. No one on the discussion group will be able to read
the message until after the moderators glance through it. This is a protection against
flaming, and also a doublecheck that the messages are all within the guidelines for posting. It also ensures that if people accidentally send a message intended for someone privately, or for the moderators, or if anyone sends an abusive message, it is not sent to all the subscribers on the list.
The moderators do NOT edit the messages that are sent to the PAR-L discussion group.
For this reason, we require that all messages not exceed 250 lines in length (approximately
10,000 KB). Messages to which you are responding directly must be edited when copied back
into the message. Forwarded information from other sources should be cleaned up prior to
submission to PAR-L (remove HTML codes, cut off surplus information or email addresses).
Remember, what you post to PAR-L is only read, not edited, by the moderators. Be courteous
and send a post that you would want to receive and read.
How do I contact the moderators?
Need to talk to a real person? Send an email to
PAR-L-MODERATORS@unb.ca. Using this address will allow you to contact Wendy or Michèle
(the co-moderators of PAR-L). If you are having a technical problem with receiving PAR-L,
you can also e-mail our technical consultant, Jennifer Brayton, at
jbrayton@arts.ryerson.ca.
Example:
You are receiving 5 copies of each PAR-L message that has been sent.
Send an email to: PAR-L-MODERATORS@unb.ca.
Please indicate in the subject header that this is a query for the moderators. Write your
message into the body of the message.
